Together with CFA Institute, the EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre has introduced seminars that take stock of the latest industry trends and research advances and clarify the distinction between true innovation and mere marketing claims.
The first annual Alternative Asset Allocation Seminar draws on the latest research and best industry practices to present advanced techniques to optimise portfolio construction and risk management when alternative assets are added to institutional portfolios.
Led by instructors who boast both academic expertise and industry experience, this intensive three-day course will enable participants to derive the full benefits of alternative investments for asset management and asset-liability management while controlling for their specific risks.

The seminar opens with an analysis of the risks and return drivers and the conditional performance of the various alternative asset classes and strategies. It shows how to deal with non-Gaussian returns, illiquid assets, and flawed data to build more resilient multi-style multi-class portfolios. It presents quantitative and qualitative tools to manage the market as well as the liquidity, valuation and counterparty risks of alternative assets.
It then looks at financial engineering techniques that improve risk budget management when alternative investments are added to asset management and liability driven investment programmes.
The seminar assesses the potential of volatility as an asset class. It looks at at its diversification and downside equity risk hedging properties and reviews volatility products and strategies.
It concludes with case studies of best industry practices for synthetic liquidity provision and extreme risk management.

Seminar Instructors

François-Serge Lhabitant, PhD, is Associate Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School, Professor of Finance at the University of Lausanne, and Chief Investment Officer at Kedge Capital.

Lionel Martellini, PhD, is Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School and Scientific Director of the EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre.

Nicolas Mougeot, PhD, is Managing Director and the European Head of Global Equity Derivatives Strategy Group at Deutsche Bank.

Christophe Reech is Chairman and founder of the Reech AiM Group S.A.

Etienne Rouzeau, PhD, is Director and Head of Allocation and Risks with Allianz Alternative Asset Management (AAAm), the fund of hedge fund operation of Allianz Global Investors.

The seminar will enable you to:
» Understand the risks, return drivers, and conditional return characteristics of hedge funds, commodities, private equity, real estate, and emerging alternative assets.
» Find out how to build resilient multi-style multi-class portfolios and use techniques to manage class exposure, to minimise the liquidity, valuation, and counterparty risks of alternative investments, and to implement portfolio-wide risk management.
» Optimise the integration of alternative investments into asset management and ALM: reduce the cost of inflation protection, maximise diversification benefits.
» Learn to implement dynamic risk-controlled strategies to optimally displace traditional assets and design open-ended investment solutions with liquidity, drawdown, and performance constraints.
» Explore the potential of volatility for portfolio diversification and hedging of downside equity risk. Survey volatility products and strategies and assess their relevance for strategic and tactical asset allocation.
» Understand property derivatives and examine their hedging, synthetic allocation, and arbitrage uses.
» Recognise the nature of extreme risks in fund of funds structures and analyse the efficiency and tractability of the various tail-risk hedging strategies.

The programme is intended for investment management professionals who advise on or participate in the design and implementation of asset allocation and risk management policies, and for sell-side practitioners who develop new asset management and ALM solutions for investors. It is especially relevant to those who need to optimise the construction and management of alternative and multi-style multi-class solutions or examine the means-as well as the benefits-of making alternative classes and strategies an integral part of portfolios.

Overview
How can fund managers deliver value for their clients in turbulent market conditions?
With returns diminishing, it is imperative that fund managers re-evaluate how they can create value for the investor. As the wider economy grapples with the fall out from the banking crisis, this conference will provide a forum for the fund management industry to meet and share ideas on the key challenges and opportunities facing the sector:

  • Coping with volatility: are we seeing a new paradigm in capital markets?
  • Meeting client expectations in unpredictable market conditions
  • How will regulation evolve in light of the banking crisis? The implications for fund managers
  • Which institutions are investors most likely to trust and how can trust be rebuilt?
  • How can fund managers deliver value through asset allocation
  • Will the convergence between the investment practices of hedge funds and traditional managers continue?
  • Understanding changing investor attitudes towards risk and money: winning the war for assets

What's new for 2009?
As market conditions are evolving so rapidly, it is imperative that our conference content remains fresh and relevant. With this in mind, here are some new issues and formats for 2009:

  • Have your say: participate in our new peer-to-peer discussions and then hear the opinions of industry leading speakers on your comments
Spotlight on Sovereign Wealth Funds: How great an opportunity are SWFs?
  • Structured products: delivering value in a bear market
The Investor Forum: hear the asset allocation tactics of leading CIOs

ICMA Primary Market Forum
Skinners' Hall, London November 11, 2008

Following the success of ICMA's 2007 Primary Market Forum, this year's event will replicate the same format, bringing together the international fixed income community including, borrowers, issuing banks and law firms to debate the business issues and regulatory developments affecting the issuance of international debt.

Inevitably the central focus of the forum will be on the market turbulence and its impact on the issuing trends of convertibles, equity hybrids and covered bonds as well as on the future of structured products.                  The Forum will also include a session on the changing regulatory landscape, touching on proposed changes to the Capital Requirements Directive, the UK Special Resolution Regime, EU rating agency regulation and Prospectus Directive gold plating, amongst other initiatives. The need for global regulatory harmonisation & cooperation will also be considered.                  The Primary Market Forum will take place in London on the afternoon of November 11, 2008 and is open to both members and non-members of the Association. The event will be of interest to compliance officers, lawyers, syndication teams, borrowers, issuers and investors in the global capital markets.

Registration

Registration for this event is free of charge. To register please e-mail your Name, Job Title and Company name to katy.butler@icmagroup.org .
